There is an interesting factoid regarding the 1865 report of the KS Adj. General. In computing the mortality rate for KS Union troops, the report erroneously used the quota rather than total enrollment in the denominator. This math error was the bass for the once-widely-cited claim that KS had the highest mortality rate among the Union states. After this was pointed out, the Kansas State Historical Society removed this claim from their website.
