While Bruce was writing and researching his books, he and I had several email conversations about "Sam Vaughn". My personal belief is that Sam is actually Dan Vaughn. Raised in Washington Twsp in Jackson County he and his 2 brothers were quite active with Quantril and were active in and around Hickman's Mill. The name Sam comes up from a Donald Hale reference in regard to a raid on Aubry KS in late 1864 early 1865. Dan Vaughn was the leader of that raid.
