And even then it couldn't have been very common or Wm. Connelly would have used it in his 1910 book on Quantrill--and he didn't. Fast forward to the 1950's and Jay Monaghan and Richard Brownlee call Anderson "Bloody Bill." Michael Fellman (1989) seems to have been aware of the problem because he says Anderson was called "Bloody Bill" in "folklore" and "legend." I wonder who else writing between 1910 and 1955 called Anderson "Bloody Bill" so that Monaghan and Brownlee picked it up?
