Re: Robert Thompson at Rolln Mill

Bruce- Here are some possibilities: (1) Robert Thompson was not from Moniteau County. This does not seem to be a burial in a family plot. There are no obvious relativies in the cemetery. He was buried under "order of the home Guards." "Coffin ordered and later put on top of grave" after the soldier's interment seems cold and indifferent rather than the loving act of family, friends and neighbors. (2) The Home Guard unit mentioned was not from Moniteau County. The locals were ordered to see to Messr. Thompson rather than burying its own. It appears the unit moved on before the arrival of the coffin. (Incidentally, no trace of the coffin remains of top of the grave.) (3) No one is these parts has heard of "Rolln Mill." Gen. Shelby passed through Moniteau County in the fall of 1863 via Tipton en route to Boonville. However, this route is several miles to the west of Hickam Cemetery, which is closer to the Jefferson City-Boonville road. Perhaps the indicated urgency of getting this man in the ground was due to the Guards carrying him some time and distance. In this scenario, Rolln Mill could be in Cooper County, or possibly across the River in Boone County
