Re: Death of Col. Moses W. Smith

Col Moses W. Smith, commanding 11th Missouri Cavalry Regiment (formerly the 6th Regiment), assumed command when Col Gideon W. Thompson was dropped at the reorganization of the regiment in December 1863. Smith was mortally wounded and left on the field at Newtonia, Missouri, on October 28, 1864, per his record in the CSR. The commander of Shelby's Bde at the time was BG M. Jeff Thompson, who took command when Col David Shanks was severely wounded at the crossing of the Osage River near Jefferson City.
