The 40th Ohio seems to have been well travelled in the center of the country, but doesn't seem a good match for an 1864 wedding for that same reason, looks like they were campaigning. On the other hand, my great grandfather's name was Don Carlos Hoover...I've wondered if the Don Carlos has anything to do with Don Carlos Buell or if it was for the Verdi opera. (Jake had a brother born after the Mexican War named Winfield Scott Hoover.)

The militia cav seems a better match considering he had a penchant for race horses and loaned one to his uncle of the same name to run the Cherokee Strip. (Someone else beat him to the claim.) If so then that means he met Virginia in Missouri.
