I've posted a couple of essays about some of the events that happened to men of the 23rd Missouri Volunteers during their first few months on Federal duty, before they were shipped off to Shiloh. I've included first person accounts by several soldiers, featuring a lengthy account (almost two thousand words) by Lt John A. Fisher that brings alive the confusion afflicting the Army of the West in the first months of the war, as well as shorter quotes from several comrades (among them my GG GF Oxley Johnson) and neighbors.
The story of the regiment's expedition to Central Missouri to counter pro-Southern activity in "Little Dixie" somehow never made it into any of the histories, formal or informal.
