If you have trouble with a first name, you might try the county in which the family lived, then start digging for county historical records which may include the names of the family, etc. I had to do this to research my Confederate ancestor, and it proved to be quite a boon to my quest.
Also, have you ever heard of the Sons of Confederate Veterans? The SCV has quite a database available on their website- it should help, as well.
