Re: Jeff Hardin Shooting in Scurry County

David:
I am elated to say the least. This is much more than I expected as I figured there was no account of the shooting based on the Courthouse records at Clairemont being destroyed by fire.
This newspaper account matches family tradition but there are many erronous stories about it. One is that he was shot in the back, another said in the chest, another said he was shot and fled to his house where he died, etc., etc.

Family tradition said he got into an argument with John Snowden, a relative by marriage, as Snowden's wife was a Hardin, and Snowden left but later returned to try and reason with Hardin. This led to a gunfight and Hardin was mortally wounded. His headstone only says died 1901.
We know now that he died on Oct 11, 1901.

I will list the source as: Newspaper accounts provided by David Martin.

I researched this J. L. Stephenson and cannot determine where he was from. Possible Tarrant Co. as James L. Stephenson, a Farmer. One in Ellis Co. was a teamster and could have been him, a John Stephenson.

Next time I travel to Snyder I plan to check the Courthouse records about this shooting. Family tradition is the man died and Jeff Hardin was killed before going to trial. It is said that Jeff was trying to convince John Snowden to say he was with him and fired in self defense.

Seems Jeff Hardin was a difficult person like his brother John Wesley.

Thanks so very much David.
