There was actually a very old tombstone at his grave in the cornfield. A 12 year-old boy discovered the tombstone, which apparently had been smashed into several pieces by farm equipment over the years. When the stone was piece together, it gave Pvt. Grist's name, the fact that he was a member of the 5th MS Cavalry, and the date of his death. His Compiled Service Record apparently confirmed that he had, indeed, been killed at the Battle of Harrisburg. The old stone, still in pieces, lies next to Pvt. Grist's new VA stone in the Old Verona Cemetery's Confederate Section, where Pvt. Grist's remains were re-interred last Saturday. -- Jim Huffman, Gainesville Vols
