Re: Battle at Franklin Creek

Franklin Creek begins in Grand Bay, AL and then runs along what is now Hwy 90. At the state line the creek turns North (yes North) where it eventually empties into the Escatava River. In addition to the notes below I have found a reference where some calvaery landed at Grand Bay, camped for several days and then proceeded North to Franklin Creek.

December 15

3,000 UNION TROOPS LAND AT PASCAGOULA;

FRANKLIN CREEK SKIRMISH

"After landing at East Pascagoula on December 15 with three thousand infantrymen, Granger began his march to Mobile. He asked Canby to allow him to use Davidson's cavalrymen, who had just arrived at West Pascagoula, so that he could try to destroy part of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. Canby ordered only two regiments to Granger because he intended to use the rest of Davidson's men in a raid from Memphis against Hood's Confederate army's communications in Tennessee. The Federal advance halted at FRANKLIN CREEK, about twelve miles from East Pascagoula, without encountering any opposition. At Franklin Creek, the Federals threw up some light entrenchments and began stripping sawmills in the area of their lumber. Granger gave up any plans for a strong push against the railroad and contented himself with keeping the Confederates' attention on him and his men."

To oppose the Federals at Franklin Creek, Maury ordered a small infantry force and three cavalry regiments to the area. By Christmas, Maury no longer thought Granger's force was a real threat to the city, an opinion that was confirmed when the Federals retreated on December 26 because of a lack of supplies.
