On the rolls of Company D, 38th Mississippi Infantry, there is a listing for P. Higden. His service record indicates that he died in Columbus, Mississippi, on July 22, 1862. The regiment was stricken by an outbreak of disease at this time, and Company D was particularly hard hit. To give you an idea of how bad it was, between April and June of 1862, 32 of the 128 men in Company D died of disease.
