Moses Pearson of 18 MISS

Moses Pearson from Marlboro District, S.C. initially enlisted in L/20 S.C. at Bennettsville, S.C., on 3 Apr 62. According to Census records, he was born about 1823. He transferred from Co L to Co N of the 20th S.C. on 1 Aug 63; this company, commanded by Captain Peterkin, was a cavalry company attached to the otherwise all-infantry unit, and saw service on the coast of South Carolina. In May 64, the cavalry company was disbanded, and the men were ordered either to infantry service, or in the case of some, they were assigned to Companies A, C and H of the Hampton Legion, which had just been converted from infantry to mounted infantry. On 1 May 64 Pearson was assigned to Comapny A, the Washington Light Infantry, composed intially of young gentlemen from Charleston and Georgetown, but by 1864 it had a large influx of men from other areas. The May-Jun and Jul-Aug 64 rolls are missing, but he is shown as present mounted on the Sep-Oct 64 roll, then is shown as transferred in Nov 64 to the 18 Miss in exchange for William Eggleston. He is buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Bennettsville, with the dates of 1823-1865 shown on his tombstone. No mention of his service. His name was completely omitted from the Memory Rolls for Company A of the Legion.

Does anyone have access to the records of the 18 Miss to see if he is mentioned? Perhaps those records can shed light on his fate.

He appears to have no connection with Mississippi, although he could have had relatives in that regiment which caused him to seek a transfer there. I suspect he was transferred for inability to mount, although the records do not so state.
