I went and looked through the Newberry County History, published about 1890, and the author devotes a full page to the affair, but not in so much detail as the web-site given by Kenny. The only detail lacking was that Crozier and the young lady had come from Alston (which due to destruction by Sherman was the end of the line)in an ordinary box car, no passenger cars being available. The website gives much greater detail and cites the shameful stonewalling by the regimental commander. Prince Rivers was later a prominent Republican politician in Reconstruction South Carolina. Thanks for the link!
