Tax on Dogs

During Mississippi's Civil War and/or Reconstruction days, have any of you ever heard of there being levied by any town, county or the state - a tax on dogs? I suspect if this occurred, it was not a statewide levy, but involved only selected counties, or, possibly - towns or communities.

I have reason to believe that this happened in Attala County, but have been unable to find any supporting evidence of this other than some notes made by my great grandfather.
