Don't know about the wife.

The raking club was just a group of the old vets who were still physically able to do light work, so they formed a raking club that helped keep the leaves raked at Beauvoir.

They actually visited the LA old vets' home at Camp Nichols as a club.

Interestingly, one other vet of the 43rd ended up as Superintendent of Beauvoir! (Don't know yet whether this meant he was just some sort of president of the assembled vets or actually ran the home.)
