Lee, you're absolutely right. If there is anything more innocuous than a dog tax, I am not sure what it is. Yet, every one of these seemingly unimportant topics, once delved into - turns out to be its own little window into the culture of the times. I have no doubt that the Mississippi dog tax will be just that once we have a better understanding of its who's, what's, when's, why's and where's.

If I can persuade "Deep South Gent" to give me something tangible that I can use as an entree into the Univ of Miss Special Collections Dept or whatever University Dept he found that original reference, I plan to pursue it right down to the bloody end of what it's all about.

My reason for having brought up the dog tax is that my Mississippi born and bred great grandfather made mention of such a tax in his handwritten memoirs and he did not live in the Delta or near any large planters. In fact, where he was born and grew up, 16th section land rents supported education, along with state appropriations and private contributions. That makes me wonder into whose coffers the old dog tax went?.

So Deep South Gent's contributions to this thread do raise questions in my mind.
