Re: Hiram P. Wells Co. 'A' 43rd Mississippi Infant

Lawrence:

I'm the co-historian for the 43rd MS Infantry.

This is what I extracted from Hiram's service record with the 43rd:

"Private Hiram P. Wells -- absent sick or absent sick at hospital most of brief career with 43rd; absent sick on last official muster on which he appears 2/63; further service unclear"

Note that he was not at the Battles of Iuka or Corinth or at the Siege of Vicksburg. He was probably never in combat with the 43rd.

I do not find him listed in MS CS Graves Registrations or in MS CS Pension Applications.

I cannot find him in service with any other MS CS unit.

If you have further info on Hiram and his service with the 43rd (letters, diary, photos, etc.), I'd be more than happy to hear from you!

Remember, too, that every person of Southern descent has a number of war-era ancestors and relatives. For instance, I have thirteen CS grandfathers and over thirty CS uncles! If one ancestor did not serve the entire war (as several of mine did not!), look for your other kin during that time, and you will be amazed at what you find! Hey! Several of mine actually stuck around til the very end!!! -- Jim Huffman, 43rd MS
