Partisans or Scalawags in MS

Feb. 22, 1864, David Essex,a private in Co. H, 89th Indiana Volunteer Infantry was killed near Pleasant Hill, MS while on a scouting or foraging party. The unit was returning to Vicksburg, MS, after being involved in the Meridian Expedition. According to an "eye" witness diposition the 7 or 8 man group was attacked by scalawags or partisans, some dressed in parts of Union uniforms. His "job" on one of the muster lists indicated that he was a cook, which might indicate that he was on a foraging patrol.

I have heard that near Union Ridge in Newton Co., MS there is a "Civil War" grave site [3 graves] but they are unmarked. This would be about where he was at the time of his death. I have a copies of his records as his widow applied for a pension for herself and 2 children.

Any information regarding the return of the Union expedition from Meredian would be appreciated and particularly any information as to the possible burial site for this man.
