FYI--Mississippi's Confederate Records

At the Mississippi Department of Archives and History in Jackson, MS, a few years ago, I found the following information in the Subject Files related to the above subject:

"Shortly before Federal troops captured Jackson in May 1863, some of Mississippi's Confederate records were placed in the custody of the local Masons, who carefully stored them in their archives room at Jackson's City Hall. Cols. J. L. Power and D. P. Porter were the last two people who knew where the records were hidden and, before their deaths, Porter shared that information with Col. E. E. Baldwin of Hinds County. When the MDAH was established in 1902, those valuable records came to light when Baldwin revealed their hiding place to Dr. Dunbar Rowland, then the Archives' director. ...those Confederate military records are now available to all who wish to see them." ...Joe Ashley
