Civil War in Jefferson Davis County

Mrs. Lucile McLendon, Supervisor

There are only two surviving veterans of the Civil War in this county Sam Harper aged 98 and Pickens Brady aged 90. Mr. Harper's mind is very active in spite of his age and he relates some very interesting stories of the war in which he played an active part. He voluteered and was enlisted February 22, 1862 at age 24 years. *His Captain was T. D. Magee from Mt. Carmel. J.O. Buchanan from Mt. Olive was his Lieutenant. The first battle Mr. Harper was in was at New Hope Church, GA: the next at Kennesaw Mountain near Atlanta, another at Pine Mountain near Atlanta; one at Altoona Station, GA: another at Blakely, Ala. He was wounded in the leg at Franklin Tenn. and stayed in the hospital several weeks, after which he was transferred to Lauderdale Springs. Miss. (from Mr. Harper, himself)

*T.D. Magee served as Captain of Company B, 46th. Miss. Regt. promoted to Major and was commanding the 46th. at the Battle of Franklin.
