Search the official records for mention of Fort Pemberton. The Confederates built a dirt-and-cotton-bale fort in the middle of the river, and sunk a steamer in the channel to prevent Union boats from slipping past.

If you visit Greenwood today, what's left of the fort is right down from Wal-Mart.
