The "recent gunboat fight" would have been the abortive attempt by Admiral Farragut to take seven warships past the Port Hudson river batteries early on March 14, 1863. Only the "Hartford" and "Albatross" got north of Port Hudson. The "Mississippi" was set afire and later blew up. The other four retreated back down river with heavy damage.
