I'm not an expert on the 4th MS Cav, but I'm originally from Natchez, MS and many men in the southwest part of the state, particularly from Franklin and Jefferson counties, were in Powers' Reg't or Hughes' Btn of the 4th MS. Their primary area was from about Vicksburg south thru Port Gibson, over to the McComb/Brookhaven area, down to the MS/LA border then over to Woodville (Wilkinson Co.) then back up the river to Natchez. They did fight with Bedford Forrest up in NE Mississippi as well.

There was a fairly good-sized skirmish about 6 miles east of Natchez out Liberty Road in which your ancestor may have been captured. Also, they were assigned (I believe) to Wirt Adams' cavalry on occasion. One of my great-great-grandfathers (T.S. Stampley) was several months shy of his 15th birthday when he enlisted in Co. G.

Also, they gave the yankees hell around the Port Hudson area during their siege there in the spring/summer of 1863. They attacked foraging parties, supply trains, etc. Very rarely did the 4th MS take any prisoners, if you get my meaning.

Other family men in the 4th include:

Co. B - Hughes' Battalion
Cicero Stephen Corbin
David W. Corbin
Robert Farr Corbin
Charles S. Magee
David W. Kinnison (KIA, Harrisburg, MS, 14 July 1864)
Cicero Zidon Stampley

Co. G - Powers'Reg't
Thaddeus Samuel Stampley
Japeth L. Magee

Co. H - Hughes'
James N. Kinnison
Daniel Higdon Guice

The 4th MS was surrendered under the command of NBForrest in Gainesville, AL in May 1865
