Lisa, as a rule, a Battalion was two or more companies, but less than ten, ten or more companies was a Regiment.
Usually a battalion was reassigned or added to, to make a new regiment.
New Cavalry units were called a battaion before they were assigned to a regiment because it was more difficult to put together a thousand men or more.
