Another piece of information I forgot to add concerning your original question: the nearest division was commanded by one of Sherman's relatives: Hugh (Ewing?).

Osterhaus had command of this region during the siege, but Sherman's Corps was camped from Birdsong to Big Black River Bridge, along Clear and Bear Creeks.
