Co D 4th MN Did 1st/2nd Corinth, Iuka, LA, March 63 had Diptheria and 3 months in hospital in Memphis and then into the trenches in the rear of Vicksburg, which I never understood as he was sunstoke before 1st Corinth at Farmington and as he was educated and a printer , he bacame brigade printer, and asst to Comm/QM Sgt. Could not go into the sun and this kept him non dead and non wounded. Assume he was in supply wagon train during those battles if not back at camp.. Did the trenchw at V. because they were covered. Took 1st Sgt job in 11 LA Inf a.d. and March 64 it became 49th USCT, Disability discharged June 64 (also had malaria) and next day was well enough to be QM Agent on big Is. #98 n. of Vicksburg and only white man there and 100 former slaves whose owners ran off. He says he was taking quinine often for the malaria. He had the men in shifts cutting wood and stacking on the landing for steamships. Went home about winter time I gather. Substitute next March for a year in 9th Vets Reserve Regt. in D.C. and saw the old 4th march up Penn Ave. the day the western army passed in review about 25 May 65. 1 of 12 clerks assigned to Gen. Howard in Freedsmen Bureau and both orginally from Maine and both friends until Gen H. died in 1909,.. Have letter to my ggF from Howard in 1895 attesting to his good service befroe and after the war and glad Calif is doing him good healthwise,, etc....
