Jess N. McLean's book on the 13th shows Elijah C. Patton as a Private in Company E (formerly A), The Alamutchie Infantry. He was enlisted on 12 June 1861 at Corinth by P. H. Bozeman. A farmer born in Mississippi, he lived near Marion, Alamutcha, Lauderdale County. He was 29 years old and married at the time of enlistment. He was listed as sick on rolls 21 October 1861 through 1 June 1862. He was severely wounded at Malvern Hill and listed as absent wounded through 1 December 1862. As of 24 December 1862 he was listed as "died at Receiving and Distribution hospital. Effects 'trifling, one book containing notes, $9.00, postage and stamps .90 cents, one haversack.' Surgeon G. W.
