The newspaper article from my previous post and the following source indicate JRE was appointed from Mississippi rather than Massachusetts.

From Mr. Fatheree's posts in this thread, JRE died in Sewanee, Franklin County, TN.

John and Sarah D. Eggleston were last listed in the 1910 Census in Raymond, Hinds County, MS.
Sarah D. is listed as a widow living with her sister in the 1920 Franklin County, Tn Census.

Born in Virginia. Appointed from Mississippi. Resigned as Lieutenant, US Navy, January 22, 1861. First Lieutenant April 5, 1861. First Lieutenant, October 23, 1862, to rank from October 2, 1862. First Lieutenant Provisional Navy, June 2, 1864, to rank from January 6, 1864.

Special duty, New Orleans, 1861. CSS McRae, New Orleans station, 1861. CSS Virginia (Merrimack), until her destruction, May 11, 1862; participated in the Battle of Hampton Roads, Va., March 8-9, 1862. Drewrys Bluff, Va., 1862. First Lieutenant, Mobile Squadron, 1862-1864. Mobile station 1864-65. Paroled May 14, 1865, Jackson, Miss.
