Re: 2nd MS Cavalry - Ezra Church

Here are dispatches concerning Jackson's cavalry --

JULY 28, 1864---9.30 a.m. (Received 10.45 a.m.)
Brigadier-General JACKSON, Commanding, &c.:

The general directs me to inform you that he wishes the enemy resisted to the best of your power, and that he desires to hear what is passing on your line.

[F. A. SHOUP, Chief of Staff.]

JULY 28, 1864--11.20 a.m. (Received 12.10 p.m.)
Brig. Gen. W. H. JACKSON:

Draw out Ross and Harrison, as you suggest, leaving only sufficient men to keep a good lookout and communication with our flank.

[F. A. SHOUP, Chief of Staff.]

JULY 28, 1864---11.45 a.m.
Brigadier-General JACKSON, Commanding, &c.:

The general prefers you do not go yourself to Campbellton; but if you think it necessary for you to go he desires that you will direct General Armstrong to come to headquarters this evening.

[F. A. SHOUP, Chief of Staff.]

JULY 28, 1864---2 p.m. (Received 2.30 p.m.)
Brig. Gen. W. H. JACKSON:

The general approves your proposition to go with the brigades to the left.

[F. A. SHOUP, Chief of Staff.]

HDQRS. ROSS' BRIGADE, JACKSON'S CAVALRY DIVISION,
In the Field, Ga., July 28, 1864---3 o'clock.

Brigadier-General JACKSON, Commanding Division:

GENERAL: Lieutenant-Colonel Boggess, who is on picket duty near the church, reports infantry advancing in his front. Only their line of skirmishers are yet in sight. I have a prisoner who belongs to Logan's corps. He says that three corps marched from their left last night, and are now flanking around to strike the railroad this side of Atlanta. I have sent Colonel Jones with Ninth Texas to re-enforce Colonel Boggess.

I am, general, very respectfully, &c.,
L. S. ROSS, Brigadier-General.

For what it's worth, "to the left" means to Campbelltown in pursuit of McCook's raid.
