One thing to remember about Mississippi State troops is that they ceased to exist after Vicksburg. Mississippi passed a law in September 1863, IIRC, that transferred all of the state troops at that time into regular Confederate service. IIRC, the various companies of state cavalry that proved so useless against Grierson's raiders, were consolidated to form the 5th, 6th, and 7th Mississippi Cavalry Regiments.
