Not every adjutant was promoted to a commissioned officers rank. One Sargeant, Alan P. Chambers, held regimental adjutant duties as needed. When there was no officer with the abilities to perform that duty, he was stuck with it. He even was stuck as Ordinance Sergeant and hated it so much he took a reduction in rank to get out of the job. Sargeant Chambers writing ability kept him up many nights doing mundane paper work after his shift on the picket line.
