Your family may have moved for a different reason, but the vast majority of families moving west were in search of more fertile land. Farming practices depleted the soil after several growing seasons. This type of movement had been true well before the war as well. Individuals and families from the eastern seaboard states often moved into the Deep South looking for better land, only to find they needed to go farther west after this land was also depleted. Texas was a favorite destination for lots of families from the Deep South. My guess would be that your folks went there for that reason.
