No, not good against ships at all. Ellsworths were diminutive (1.5-inch bore?), an anti-personnel gun at best. Whatever Gen. Taylor was asking for, these small breech-loading guns (what ever they were) were all Pemberton was offering (Taylor had unsuccessfully begged Pemberton's Whitworths in Nov. '62). In spring, '63, Pemberton was constantly telling commanders he can't supply the guns (esp. heavy guns) they were asking for.
