I have confirmed that Daniel Harkey served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Battl'n, State Troops, Mississippi Infantry for 12 months in 1862-1863. Then he enlisted as a Private in Company K, 2nd Mississippi Cavalry. He died 9/27/1863. I would like to know something about the action Company K saw before October, 1863. Would like to know if he died of wounds received in combat. Also, why would his rank changed when he went to the 2nd MS Cavalry? I realize this is probably a dumb question, but I don't know much about the military.
