Re: Whitworth Captured at Vicksburg

I found a couple of references to the Whitworth at Fort Morgan, Ala.

1. During the siege it is claimed that a well aim Confederate shot took out a Union tent where a night-time card game was in progress.

2. According to the O.R. the gun was surrendered in working order, complete with accoutrements.

Today, using a new way (for me) for word searching the O.R. I found more tid-bits of information on Whitworths.

--------------------------------
Series 1 - Volume 14 p. 876:

February 12,1863, two Whitworth guns lying at arsenal, Augusta, Ga.

--------------------

Series 1 - Volume 18 p. 932:

S. COOPER, CHARLESTON, S. C., January 3, 1863.
Adjutant and Inspector General, Savannah, Ga.:

Five Whitworth 12-pounder guns have lately arrived at Wilmington. Cannot two be sent here and two to Savannah for Genesis Point? They are much required to drive off blockaders.
G. T. BEAUREGARD.

--------------------

RICHMOND, Va., January 3, 1863.
General G. T. BEAUREGARD,
Charleston, S. C.:

The guns have been already disposed of by the Secretary of War—one retained at Wilmington, one sent to Charleston, one to Mobile, and one to Vicksburg. The fifth belongs to the Navy Department.

S. COOPER,
Adjutant and Inspector General.

[Note: my opinion is that since he does not give a date of when the guns were disposed this brings up some questions. At Vicksburg where in November 62, it is reported that there were two Whitworths under Pemberton. Is Cooper saying he sent a third gun prior to Jan. 1863 or is he saying he added a second gun to Pemberton's inventory prior to Nov. 62?]

--------------------

Series 1 - Volume 18 p. 1017:

CHARLESTON, S. C. April 23, 1863—9.30 p. m.
JAMES A. SEDDON,
Secretary of War, Richmond, Va.:

Am informed four heavy Whitworth guns have arrived at Wilmington on Merrimac. Cannot two be sent here? They are much needed.
G. T. BEAUREGARD.

[Note:the 'heavy' discription could mean most probably they were 5 inch/80-pounders since these where size being captured by Union blockaders.]

---------------------
Series 1 - Volume 24 (Part II) Page 411:
Return of Casualties .in Shoup’s Brigade during the siege of Vicksburg.

(Endorsement)

Approved. One Whitworth gun on my line was disabled on May 19, from effect of its own shot. The two howitzers belonged regularly to my brigade; the other artillery was detached from other commands.

F. A. SHOUP,
Brigadier- General.
DEMOPOLIS, August 31, 1863.

[Note: Most probably the gun reported by Baldwin's report on his actions at Vicksburg, since Shoup's left rested on Baldwin's right in the trench line.]
