Confederate Asst Surgeons

Is there anywhere to find out information on Asst. Surgeons?
I am looking for information on Dr. Stephen VanAllen, who died April 26, 1862 and is buried in the Brown Cemetery in Amite Co, Miss. Him, his wife, and son are listed in the 1860 Franklin Co, Miss census as VanHallen. Dr. VanAllen's wife (Rebecca Eugenia Brown VanAllen) remarried after the war to Moses Jackson (who's wife was killed by slaves during the war)
In Howell's "For Dixie Land...." series, I find a Stephen Van Allen, Asst. Sergeon, (3rd Brigade) In looking at the Confederate Order of Battle for Shiloh, the only 3rd Brigades with "local" troops would be S.A.M. Wood's Brigade (3rd Miss Inf Battalion) and Statham's Brigade (22nd Miss Inf)
Am I headed in the right direction? How were asst surgeons assigned? Any other way to find out cause of death, etc?
Thanks
Virgil
