Re: Panola Vindicators, 17th Mississippi

Hi Alan.

My ggg-grandfather, John Young Middleton, was the only person by that name in Panola County in 1860 (according to the 1860 Federal Census). However, there were a number of other "John" Middletons in Panola County at that time.

I found a "John Y. Middleton" listed in the NPS Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System on the Web. The gentleman listed was associated with the 17th Mississippi Infantry, Company H (which I latter found was raised in Panola). This NPS Civil War Soldier and Sailor System lists an alternate name of "John/Middleton, Jr" (which was never a name for my ggg-grandfather).

I guess why I say he "very likely" served is I don't have any collaborating evidence that this gentleman listed on the NPS site is my ancestor. There is no birthday or age listed or any other personal information that tells me these two John Y. Middletons are the same man.

I've been doing genealogical research of my family for many years but I am very new to researching military records from the War of Southern Independence. I'm used to researching several types of civilian records to cross-reference information to make sure I've got the correct individual. Do you have any suggestions of where I should be looking to be sure this is my ancestor, Alan?

Thanks.

Sincerely,
Bruce Schaefer
