I don't mean to belabor this point, but I'm just curious if you know, in what years the Civil War was fought? I would think anyone with a passing interest in history would know 1861-1865 were the years, in which, the war was fought. If then, I have information that the person I'm looking for was born in 1856, it would seem I'd immediately understand that whatever other information I had, I'd know this person could not have fought in the American Civil War.

You are probably feeling embarrassed or uncomfortable at being singled-out by the "webmaster" for this question. In all honesty, that is not my purpose and I hope this message board or another more appropriate one will help you with your search. As an amateur historian, family genealogist and proprietor of this website, I'm trying to understand how this website can more effectively respond to experienced and novice historians and genealogists. In your case, a short form with basic information about constructing a query to research a Civil War veteran might be the answer. If you had an example of the type of information that might help us identify your veteran it might have helped you realize that this man was not a "candidate" for Civil War service. Would something like this help from our "FAQ", Frequently Asked Questions page?

The shortcoming is not yours, but mine. I need to do a better job, providing or directing people to basic information on the Civil War and how to search for a Civil War ancestor for our visitors who are not familiar with this war.
