Perhaps many of these questions stem from the seeming abundance of marble headstones marking Confederate veterans in cemeteries throughout the South today. I'm referring to the ones that indicate the name, rank and regiment of the soldier.
It is my understanding, however, that these markers were available to the families in the late 1800s-early 1900s either partially or fully subsidized by the individual states and veterans' organizations. Is that correct?
