Civil War Uniform Insignia

I have an object that belonged to an ancestor that fought with the 18th Mississippi Infantry. It appears to be a nametag that was possibly worn on a uniform. It has his name at the top and hanging underneath his name is another piece that looks almost like a badge of some sort. It says, "Chaplain, 18th Mississippi Voluntary Infantry, C.S.A"

Can anyone tell me the history behind these? Are they nametags or are they some sort of award? Any information will be helpful.
