Tks, Jim. I try various Google combinations before posting here, and am aware of the info you note, but always welcome other combinations. (Your Howell ref and Franklin county had started me on this route.) I have not a shred of a "full name" signature, and have wondered if two (at least) different men are hiding behind the initials. Ancestry dot com yields at least two candidates, and I'm trying to nail down the "real" fellow. I do know that, after exchange or release from prison he and about nineteen "signal" men clustered at Camp Lee (Richmond, VA outskirts), presumably awaiting release from parole. The add'l info I posted illustrates one of the two men (TN, born in Alabama); another, w/o the middle initial (b. TN), is also on Ancestry, and has several striking parallels, confusing the issue. Perhaps association with Gen. Gardner will provide a key.
