Ord was there a day ahead of Rosecrans, but when Grant realized that Rosecrans was not coming up as quickly as he thought he would he ordered Ord to wait until he heard the sounds of Rosecrans engaging Price before launching his attack. Ord supposedly never heard the sounds of the battle due to a north wind which created an "acoustic shadow". Grant never heard the guns either.
