For details on Rock Island prisoner-of-war camp and Lookout Mountain, let me suggest "Rebels at Rock Island" and "Shipwreck of the Hopes: The Battles for Chattanooga". Of course you don't want to omit the Battle of Chickamauga from the story, so look for another Pete Cozzens book, "This Terrible Sound: The Battle of Chickamauga."

For what it's worth, during the summer of 1863 General Withers resigned his commission and Maj. Gen. Thomas C. Hindman took command of his division.
