From a letter wrote April 16th at Corinth, from Benjamin F. Wilkinson to his brother Micajah (my grgrgreat grandfather), telling of their brother "Jeffie" Jefferson W. Wilkinson being killed:

"....The yanks were in 20 feet of us. One ahead with his hat in his hand hollowing "Come on boys the damned rebels are retreating." Some one dropped him and the flag bearer & another grabbed the flag and broke. When they saw us give way they hoisted a black flag. But they took it down in a hurry when they saw they had to retreat. In that charge Jeffie got killed."
