According to Wikipedia, it's pronounced Vil-uh-pig. Considering the lack of culture of those he commanded, that's probably the most common way of saying it. After all, he was not exactly Creole or even from Louisiana, where the French pronunciation might prevail. Of Huguenot extraction, born in S.C., the pronunciation might very well have been Americanized long before the Civil War.
