Re: Marietta Confederate Cemetery
In Response To: Ron Skellie ()

Lynn,
I have loaned my copy of Larry Blair's book or have misplaced it. My main research is on Miss. units, but I also gathered names of men from LA because of some of my relatives. Sorry, but I don't have the complete list. You mat be able to get a copy from the Marietta Georgia Library or the Civil War Museum in marietta.
I am including evrything I could find on the Cemetery.

It may not line up correctly, but the history and contact names will help.

"Confederate Veterans Interred In The Confederate Cemetery at Marietta, GA from Mississippi'
Edited by Ron Skellie 2000

Source: Confederate Veterans Interred In The Confederate Cemetery at Marietta, GA, Larry O. Blair and Thomas E. Kyle, Byron's Graphic Arts, Pub., Maryville, TN., 1996.

The Confederate Cemetery in Marietta was according to the memorial marker originally established to accommodate the victims of a train wreck on September 13, 1863 near Allatoona Pass. According to the research I have seen so far, the victims of the accident were from Kentucky and Tennessee. To date we have no evidence that men of the 7th Miss. or any other regiment of the "High Pressure Brigade" were involved in the accident.
The possibility holds that wounded and sick from the Tullahoma, Shelbyville and Chattanooga area (Mississippians included) may have been transferred to Marietta when General Bragg ordered the evacuation of Chattanooga around September 7-9, 1863.

[In addition there is a monument for Capt. T.J. Stanford of "Stanford's Miss. Battery" in a prominent spot near the main memorial-RJS]

The remainder of the soldiers buried at the Marietta Confederate Cemetery include men killed at Chickamauga and removed from the battlefield to Marietta along with others buried in various battlefield locations from Resaca to Marietta along the line of the Atlanta & Western RR. In addition men who died during the war from the various hospitals in Marietta and others who survived the war, but later died at the Confederate Soldiers Home were interred here as well.

According to the authors 129 men from Mississippi are buried in the cemetery along with men from all the Confederate states including Kentucky, Maryland and Missouri Confederate troops. Only Alabama and Tennessee had more men listed as buried at the cemetery with 269 and 325 respectively. The hospital section holds 629 graves, the Confederate Soldiers Home of Georgia-96, family plots at least 14, and another 970 or more unknown or unrecorded burials.

The listing that follows is taken from the lists compiled by several organizations over more than 100 years and are copied as listed in the book by Blair and Tyler. My purpose in making this list available to you is to ensure that anyone seeking a loved one's burial site will not be denied these leads. Special attention should be paid to spelling errors and duplications. I have noticed some, but others more familiar with the units or the family may notice more. Please let us know if you find errors or can make corrections or additions based on records or personal knowledge."

End Notes:

From “LWF Roster” Whittington, M. C. Pvt. Co. K died at Marietta, GA Dec. 11, 1863 This death was listed as unknown cause. Due to it’s close proximity to the battle at Missionary Ridge or Chickammauga, we assume that it resulted from wounds in battle. There is a listing at Marietta Confederate Cemetery for “W.C. Whittington Co. K 7th Miss.” that I believe to be M.C. Whittington-rjs)
