Could be a National Guard unit from the late 19th or earlier 20th century.
During the mid-nineteenth century, lettering on a hat or cap normally followed a 'first letter of each word' convention. For instance, BCG for "Bogue Chitto Guards" or QR for "Quitman Rifles". MISS as described in the post makes no sense for a Confederate company.
