The Mississippi in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Tippah Co. and Southern Illinois connection

Chuck,
That area of southeastern Illinios had mixed feelings about the war. That area was then and is still referred to at Little Egypt (Because of Cairo, Il.). It was origonally settled by folks from Tennesse and Kentucky whose origons were mostly from the Carolinas. So you can see why there were southern loyalties there. I don't know about your ancestor, but many of the men from that area went south and joined Confederate units. It seems to me from memory that some of them joined Tennesse units and I think some went to North Carolina and if I am not mistaken many went to Mississippi to join units from that state. I am sure there will be someone with more knowledge that will assist you in your search. But I hope I was able to shed some light for you. Frank
