Thank you Mitchell Sanders and George Purvis. You guys are a great help. If John Reneck of the 21st was a 23 year old German Baker, then he is not John Renick. The Renicks are from Scotland. So the spelling Reneck is not mispelled Reneck is correct and he's not kin. I have a 35 year old Genealogy done in the days of typewriters and hands on research before desktops and the internet. I am new and this and it's hard. This 35 year old Genealogist research Mississippi Records 35 years ago and found among the Tennessee Confederate records
ATT Renick enlisted 4 May 186? for (1) year at Randolph, Tipton County, Tennessee with Colonel Carroll. There were a lot of Renick's in West Tennessee. But According to The Surnames of Scotland Published by the New York Public Library, Pages 689-690, "we have found various spellings of the name Renick." "Reneck" is one of the various spellings. However, it's been oral history that 400 years ago the Renick's moved from Germany to Scotland. There is a Renick England on the line with Scotland. I won't bore you with the other spellings. Mary Renick, daughter of George and Mary Renick, was born 30 January 1760 and died 22 May 1852 in Madison County, Mississippi. She married Elijah fleming, Revolutionary War Soldier, who died in SC in 1804. In 1833, Mary (Renick) Fleming and five of her adult Children moved to Mississippi. Mary had a son "George Anson Renick." How could her son be named Renick? But according to 1973 Genealogy by Elizabeth Wood Thomas, Columbus, Mississippi (she physically went to see records), she found in State Archives Mississippi Confederate records (15), John Reneck Company G, 2 nd Miss cav. G.A. Renick, Joseph Renick, and Thomas Renick. These last 3 enlisted in Boliver County, Mississippi on 14 April 1864 in Captain Russell's Company, Miss. I know Bolivar County, I finished at Delta State University, Cleveland Miss. These guys are related to me but I don't know how. Then in dunbar Rowland's Mississippi, the Heart of the South, page 383. "in 1802 Gov. Clairborn wrote to to Lieutenant S. Renick, Commanding a detachment of U.S. troops at Grindstone Ford, in Clairborne County to proceed to Walnut Hill to break up the Mason-Harp robber band. So I still don't know how, who, or why there is a headstone in Bethel graveyard that says, John Renick, Co. G. 2nd Miss Cav. However, I know the County Court House of Ripley, Miss was burn down by the Yankees in 1864, I am sure a lot of records went up in smoke. The only other guess is I know the Jefferson Davis Cavalry was first organized as the 2nd Mississippi Cavalry battalion with 3 Mississippi and one Alabama Companies. Captain's Martin Co. A and Gordon's Co. B, and Perrin Co. C, 1861 Ashland, Miss. Ashland is very near Bethel Graveyard. As this grew, it became a Regiment, then a battalion, most companies from Alabama and Georgia. Co. "G" was raised in Georgia. I saw a reference on the internet where Jefferson Davis Cavalry took or "consolidated the Company "G" of some other Miss Cavalry unit. I wasn't watching what I was doing and lost the reference. This is driving me nuts. I am the last Renick. The very last! I have one cousin who's gay and I have two daughters. I want to pass it to my kids where it won't be forgotten. Where can you find the muster roll of Jefferson Davis Cavalry Legion? I've taken up too much of your valuable time and I appreciate your comments. If you ever run across anything, please keep me in mind. Bests Regards, Keith Renick, Peachtree City, Ga.
